Living by the beach is terrific. Long summer nights mean cooling down with a dip after work, or enjoying a long walk along the bay to relax at the end of a busy week. The flip side of living on the bay is taking necessary care of ourselves by the water – which involves swimming safely and taking care of our skin in the sun. With that in mind, Chisholm & Gamon reports on the Cancer Council’s latest campaign – involving you in throwing a SunSmart Party.
Do you know that 2 out of 3 Aussies will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70? Despite years of sun safety campaigning and the slow creep of SPF’s from 15+ to 50+, collectively we’re not taking the Cancer Council’s message to heart. Queensland has the world’s highest rates of skin cancer, a fact which is quite shocking. If you (or someone you love) has been affected by skin cancer, you might feel motivated to hold a SunSmart Party – a fun way of raising funds for the Cancer Council whilst spreading the message of sun safety.
First up – choose your theme. Do you want a ‘Howzat’ retro cricket theme indoors, with zinc galore and baggy greens? Perhaps a Hawaiian party with hula skirts and tropical shirts is more your style? Maybe a casual picnic BBQ under the trees will suit your schedule. Whatever you choose – make sure to hold your SunSmart Party between now and February 28th 2013. Register to host your party by clicking here – you’ll be sent a host kit with fundraising ideas to make the most from your event. Host your party – and invite everyone! It could be on Australia Day, or even a ‘return to work’ lunchtime shenanigan replete with palmtree decorations and a raffle. You can download a heap of cheesy, SunSmart Party invitations and decorations from their website by clicking here.
Funds raised by your SunSmart Party go directly towards research to treat and cure skin cancer, run prevention and early detection programs and facilitate patient support services. That’s something surely worth throwing a party for, right?

And remember – please apply at sunscreen at least half an hour before exposure to the elements, reapplying every two hours – pop on a hat to protect your face and shoulders – and seek shade in the heat of the day.
