Hop On Your Vespa – It’s the Italian Film Festival!

Maybe the Grand Final isn’t your deal.  Or perhaps you didn’t quite get away on that exciting overseas trip these school holidays – and none of the movies on show at the moment are quite your style, and you want something a little bit different. Today’s Chisholm & Gamon blog takes a look at the Lavazza Italian Film Festival.

Running from September 19 to October 9 in Melbourne, the Lavazza Italian Film Festival brings an extra taste of Italy to the city, and conveniently, to Brighton.  If you are looking to avoid the ‘Granny’ this Saturday, give new film When the Night (Quando la Notte) a try. It will begin at 1.30pm at Palace Brighton Bay and tells the tale of a bittersweet romance, with lovers kept apart for fifteen years.

If you’re after a laugh, try out Love is in the Air (Com’e’ Bello far l’Amore), a comedy about a long-married couple whose romantic life is suffering… until two adult film stars come to stay. Sure to be full of awkward and hilarious situations, Love is in the Air won Best Comedy and Best Original Score at the 2012 Italian Golden Globes. You are in for a treat with this one.

For something with a little more substance, take a look at Caesar Must Die (Cesare Deve Morire). This award-winning film charts a group of inmates at a high security prison, who are rehearsing a performance of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Life begins to reflect art in both the film and real life, as it is performed by convicted criminals and the lines between drama and reality are blurred. Expect to see corruption and betrayal, but also abundant compassion and humanity.

If you’re looking to make a night out of your film experience, why not take advantage of this offer from Lavazza? Tiamo Restaurant on Lygon Street are offering a main, a dessert and  coffee for $35 or Cafe Republic in South Yarra will offer you a deal for entree, main and a coffee for $40.

With four movies a day at Brighton – and more at other locations around the city (see the full programme and book tickets here) – there’s plenty of choice to add a little Italian to your week!
