As Melbournians we are often very proud of our city. St Kilda Short Film Fest Set To Be ‘Un-Reel’

Those that look for entertainment outside of conventional film will revel in the upcoming St Kilda Film Festival, Australia’s longest running and most prestigious short film festival.  With a brief to educate, inspire, challenge and entertain a diverse audience, the festival showcases creativity, innovation and exploratory cinematic talent at its most dynamic, whilst assisting the profile and vital development of Australian filmmakers and the industry overall. Today, Chisholm & Gamon Blog puts the spotlight on this social ‘must attend’ for all imaginative cinema buffs!

Now in its 29th year, this dynamic festival runs from 22-27 May and is hosted by the much-loved Astor and Palais Theatres. Exceptional creative quality and fierce competition are guaranteed; the curated festival screens only the top 100 Australian short films in its elite final selection from the hundreds of films submitted. Comedy, documentaries, animation, horror, sci fi, drama and love – all genres vying for Best Film and a share of the prize pool. Partnering with premier international film festivals Annecy International Animation Film Festival (regarded as THE global animated film event) and the Cork Film Festival (spotlighting the best of Irish cinema) allows movie buffs to tap into the talent of short filmmakers worldwide.

The St Kilda Film Festival has propelled the careers of many accomplished filmmakers and directors, including ‘Red Dog’ director Kriv Stenders, one of Australia’s most prolific film makers and director Warwick Thornton, whose debut feature ‘Samson and Delilah’ was awarded the prestige Camera D’Or at Cannes Film Festival 2009.

A jam-packed program is set for this year. Alongside the Top 100 film selection, look out for Special Screenings, featuring iconic clips and the Soundkilda Music Video Competition and After Party, an extravaganza of innovative music and visuals on the largest screen in the Southern Hemisphere. There’s a dedicated Youth Program to encourage and empower young creative talent and the Filmmaker Development Program, offering those established or new to the craft a rare opportunity to hear key industry contacts share their knowledge and advice on writing, editing, directing and transitioning from short to feature films. The popular Industry Open Day also returns, with exhibitions and direct access to key industry players sure to inspire and educate.

And of course, there are the films! Amongst the ‘not to be missed’ is the visually delightful Glossy, an animated treat starring Caroline Craig (Underbelly) about a team of teenage dressing table cosmetics rendezvousing at a party – highly commended at Sydney’s W.O.W Festival. For a good laugh, experience Joel Edgerton as writer, produce, director and actor in Monkeys, a quirky, comedic tale of two men and one haircut that also made the final selection at Tropfest 2011 and the Seattle Film Festival.  Or catch We Are Illuminated, a documentary that explores the geographical and social distance of five Melbourne night shift workers and captured audiences at other high-profile film fests around the world.

For more information and full program highlights, visit the official St Kilda Film Festival, website. See you at the movies!

C&G On: The Human Rights Arts and Film Festival

As Melbournians we are often very proud of our city. Who hasn’t heard phrases such as “I’d rather be called a Melbournian than an Australian”, “Melbourne is a young New York” or “strike down the person who ever dares to claim that Sydney is better than Melbourne”! While we aren’t that extreme in our sentiments here at Chisholm and Gamon, we’re pretty confident that we live in an amazing city which enjoys regard internationally. With unpredictable weather being our only fault, we know that Melbourne has the blessings of great coffee, a fantastic food scene, stylish inhabitants and a year long calendar of various festival events. Cue another such festival to appreciate – the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival which takes place from May 15 – 27th.

The HRAFF has been running successfully for the past 5 years – aiming to inspire, engage and entertain the community whilst supporting local artists and encouraging debate and social change. It is a festival that may have you walking away wanting to make a difference – in our opinion at C&G that’s not such a bad thing! Here is our selection of interesting events from this year’s festival program.

Film

Forget about the latest big budget box office hit – these films are raw and independent, dealing with the world’s most important current issues. Expect thought-provoking content that will have you thinking twice about the global community. Our recommendation is Todd Kellstein’s Buffalo Girls, a gritty look at the ‘child fighting’ industry in Thailand. For all film titles and session times visit www.hraff.org.au/melbourne-film.

Music

There is nothing better than discovering an ‘up and coming’ indie band or artist  – and Melbourne is somewhat of a treasure trove for underground and ethnic music lovers. HRAFF is showcasing a number of local music acts and one which we found particularly appealing is the Sol Nation concert – a blend of reggae, samba, funk, salsa, East Timorese folksong and African dance.  The event will be held at Abbotsford Convent on Sunday 20 May 2012. Visit www.myspace.com/solnation to purchase tickets.

Art

Echoes Of Others – Illuminating the Gaps Amid Translation’ is the official exhibit of the festival featuring local artists such as Brad Haylock, Anita Belia, and Minela Krupic.  Curated by Samantha McCulloch and Frances Wilkinson, the art works on display concern the theme of human rights. Held at the No Vacancy building at QV, the exhibition will run from May 16 – 27 from 11am-5pm (Tues-Sat) and 12pm-5pm (Sun).

Forums

Flights of Fancy: the ethics of travel is a forum that will be held on Saturday May 26 at ACMI from 5pm. The forum will involve discussion from a number of panel members such as tourism marketing specialist Jeff Jarvis, NGO volunteer Jane Crouch, Australian Volunteers International CEO Dimity Fifer, President of the Surfing Association of PNG Andrew Abel, and Californian born filmmaker Adam Pesce. With so many of us enjoying the increasingly popular overseas holiday of late it looks like an event that could be of interest to all.

C&G Recommends: A Family Day at the RSPCA Million Paws Walk

At Chisholm & Gamon we all have a little soft spot for man’s best friend. Whether it’s a pampered pooch or a big family ‘teddy bear’ dog that you favor, we recognize the importance of treating our family pets right. So you can image the delight in the office when we realized the 17th Annual RSPCA Million Paws Walk was just around the corner. Dog owners and their pets from all walks of life will be pounding the pavement on Sunday the 20th May at Albert Park Lake in an attempt to socialize, raise some much needed funds for the RSPCA and just enjoy a fun day in the sun (or the rain– it is Melbourne).

Every year the RSPCA attends to over 43,000 reports of animal cruelty and neglect, while running several animal shelters throughout the state. The Million Paws Walk event appeals to animal lovers far and wide who appreciate and want to support the protection of not only dogs but all animals. You only need to watch one episode of Bondi Vet or Animal Pet Rescue to appreciate the necessity of proper animal treatment and the great effort involved in the RSPCA’s work. This year their goal is to reach a target of $477,000 with $114,983 already raised. There is an option to register for the walk individually or as a team – which is always fun. Registration starts at 8.30 am and the walk starts at 10am on the Pelican Lawn next to the Carousel restaurant. The walk traverses 5kms and is both stroller and wheelchair friendly.

The day also includes a pet expo including over 20 exhibitors featuring the latest pet products and services.  Agility canine courses and demonstrations will also feature with free vet checks and dog washes available. Celebrity guests and live entertainment round out the appeal of the day with food and beverage stalls present. Merchandise with the event’s logo can also be purchased online if you wish to show further support.  Registration is processed online with the added bonus of going into the draw to win a new Mitsubishi Lancer. If for some reason you can’t make the event but still love animals and respect the hard work of the RSPCA, then feel free to give them a call and arrange to make a donation on 03 9224 2222. We’re sure they’ll be more than pleased to help!

Lights, Camera, Action… Creative Expression in Bayside and Port Phillip Bay

Melbournians pride themselves as cultured and creative individuals and it’s evident that the Bayside and Port Phillip area are hot spots for all things thespian. In fact the area is no stranger to the odd homegrown celebrity and many a film crew have used the beautiful beachside area as a backdrop to their films. Recently films such as ‘I Love You Too’, ‘Any Questions For Ben’, and the Hollywood produced ‘I Frankenstein’ have been shot in the area. We love to support local happenings here at Chisholm & Gamon, so we’re shining the spotlight on a few homegrown productions.

St Kilda’s Theatre Works in association with The Shift Theatre are currently staging a production of ‘The Girls In Grey’ every Wednesday-Saturday until 13 May 2012. Written by Carolyn Bock and Helen Hopkins the play is set in World War One and explores the experiences of three Australian nurses and the emotional consequences of war. ‘The Girls In Grey’ was shortlisted for the National Play Festival and is an honest portrayal featuring local talent in a live space. We think it’s a great alternative to the standard DVD on the couch on a Friday night. Tickets cost $28 Full and $20 Concession. Call 03 9534 3388 for bookings or go to www.theatreworks.org.au for further details.

Young talent is something to be cherished and encouraged. Well, that’s our belief here at Chisholm & Gamon – and if you agree then why not check out what may just be the next big thing in Australian entertainment at the VCE Top Acts Gala on May 25 2012. The cream of the class of 2011’s performance talent will be on show at St Kilda’s Palais Theatre with a multitude of acts in the categories of Dance, Drama, Theatre Studies, and Music Performance. Tickets start range from $15 – $25. To purchase call 03 9525 3240. Further details are available at the Port Phillip Leader website. Who knows you may witness the beginnings of the next Gotye or Cate Blanchett!

The CLOC Musical Theatre Company is tackling all the glamour and drama that is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway classic ‘Sunset Boulevard’. Chris Bradtke directs the musical theatre icon alongside musical director Andrew McCalman and choreographer James Rooney. The show runs until the 19th May 2012.

Tickets are available to purchase via the CLOC website. Since we’re talking musical happenings in St Kilda, we’re going to have to quote good old Molly Meldrum on this one… “Do yourself a favour and get tickets to this show!”

Can you believe all this creativity is right here on our doorstop? As if you need another reason to live Bayside!!!

Why We LOVE Melbourne!

Did you know that, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over the last 10 years Melbourne’s population growth outran all other Australian capital cites, growing by 20% or 666,000 new residents? For every three new residents in Sydney, Melbourne added four and in the year to end June 2011 alone, welcomed almost 1300 new residents a week. Melbourne is Australia’s fastest growing capital city and it’s not hard to understand why. Today, Chisholm and Gamon blog explores why this love affair with Melbourne is set to be a long and happy one!

What is the appeal? What makes Melbourne so desirable and liveable?

Affordable housing and return on property investment to start. Melbourne has long maintained a solid reputation for affordable housing and consistent medium-long term capital growth. Despite a consistently robust property market, home ownership has still remained within reach and more so of late, courtesy of the current stabilising price cycle. According to the REIV, for the March 2012 quarter, median prices remained stable over the period and year to that point. The metropolitan Melbourne median house price was $535,000, a minor increase of 0.9% on the previous quarter median. With units/apartments, the median price dropped 1.1% to $445,000. In terms of investment, over the medium term, both types of dwellings have provided similar returns, with the median house price increasing 43.4% over the past five years and units/apartments increasing 39.1%.

Many Melbournians have chosen the more affordable north and west outer fringes of our city to reside, spurring the emergence of new suburbs. These suburbs have continued to expand through the attraction of a quieter family environment, affordable house and land packaging, the provision of new shopping amenities and improved access into the CBD.

For other Melbournians, inner city and bayside areas reign supreme.  The city’s cosmopolitan lifestyle allure teamed with solid capital property growth is hard to beat. Close proximity to quality education, restaurants, and cafes, diversity in shopping options and entertainment, multiple public transport choices all add appeal, not to mention the vast diversity in architecture. The popularity of the inner city is no more evident than in the numbers. For the quarter ended March 2012, three of five suburbs with clearance rates in excess of 80% were the inner city suburbs of Elsternwick, Fitzroy, North Melbourne. During February 2012, the overall auction clearance rate for houses in inner metropolitan Melbourne was just over 71%, compared to 62% in the outer east and almost 42% for Melbourne’s west.

Increasing interest in waterfront living has also maintained demand for bayside suburbs. Not surprising when considering the choice of multi million dollar luxurious mansions through to affordable family homes, a beach-oriented, outdoor lifestyle, shopping precincts with ‘village’ appeal and an engaged, proactive community proud of its environment.

Then there is everything else that characterises Melbourne in general – a relatively clean city, the melting pot of global cultures, excellent family amenities, ‘green’ spaces, thriving markets, amazing dining with a world influence, quaint lanes and ultra modern shopping centres, sporting events galore and easy access to wineries and snowfields. What more could anyone want for?
